Your Child’s First Dental Visit: The Right Age & What to Expect
Written & medically reviewed by Dr. Rajat Shaikh, MDS — Pediatric & Preventive Dentistry · Last updated July 2026

Take your child to the dentist by their first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth appearing — the first visit is short, friendly and focused on prevention and building comfort.
A happy first dental visit sets the tone for a lifetime of good oral health. Here is when to go and what to expect.
When should my child first see a dentist?
By age one, or within six months of the first tooth appearing. Early visits let the dentist catch problems sooner and, just as importantly, help your child feel relaxed about dental care.
What happens at the first visit?
- A gentle check of the teeth, gums and jaw development
- A count of the teeth and a look for early decay
- A soft cleaning and fluoride advice if needed
- Guidance on brushing, diet and habits for parents
For toddlers we often use a relaxed “lap exam”, and we keep everything friendly and unhurried.
How do I prepare my child?
- Talk about it positively; avoid words like “pain” or “injection”
- Pick a morning slot when your child is fresh
- Bring a favourite toy for comfort
- Stay calm yourself — children pick up on your mood
Our whole approach to pediatric dentistry is built around fear-free, gentle first experiences.
Frequently asked questions
Why so early — my child only has a few teeth?
Early visits are about prevention and comfort. Catching habits and early decay now avoids bigger problems later, and your child learns the dentist is a friendly place.
Will the first visit hurt?
No — the first visit is a gentle examination and advice, with no uncomfortable procedures. The goal is a positive experience.
