Dental Care During Pregnancy

Dental care is safe and important during pregnancy — hormonal changes can inflame the gums (pregnancy gingivitis), and routine check-ups and cleaning are recommended, ideally in the second trimester.

Looking after your teeth during pregnancy is good for you and your baby. Here is what to know.

Is it safe to see the dentist while pregnant?

Yes — routine check-ups and professional cleaning are safe and encouraged during pregnancy. Always tell your dentist you are pregnant and how far along.

Pregnancy and your gums

Hormonal changes make gums more prone to inflammation and bleeding — “pregnancy gingivitis”. Good brushing, flossing and a cleaning help keep it in check; see bleeding gums.

What treatments are safe, and when?

  • Check-ups and cleaning: any time
  • Necessary treatment (e.g. treating infection): best in the second trimester
  • Elective/cosmetic work: usually postponed until after delivery
  • X-rays: avoided unless necessary, and done with proper shielding

Caring for your teeth during pregnancy

Brush twice daily, don’t skip cleanings, and if morning sickness causes vomiting, rinse with water and wait before brushing to protect enamel. Always follow your obstetrician’s advice too.

Frequently asked questions

Are dental X-rays safe during pregnancy?

Dental X-rays are avoided where possible during pregnancy, but when genuinely needed they are done with shielding and are considered low-risk. We discuss it with you first.

Are bleeding gums normal in pregnancy?

Mild gum inflammation and bleeding (pregnancy gingivitis) are common due to hormones. Keep brushing and flossing and have a cleaning — see a dentist if it is severe.
